What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is made in your liver and has many important functions. For example, it helps keep the walls of your cells flexible and is needed to make several hormones. However, like anything in the body, too much cholesterol or cholesterol in the wrong places creates problems.

Cholesterol is a natural substance found in foods, and is even created by our bodies to help build and maintain our cells. But too much cholesterol can lead to major problems, like heart attack or stroke. Cholesterol travels in your blood through small carriers called lipoproteins a complex of fats and proteins. These lipoproteins exist in two forms, High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) and Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL). People of all ages and backgrounds can have high cholesterol. According to a research 71 million American adults  have LDL cholesterol. High cholesterol levels are due to a variety of factors including heredity, diet, and lifestyle. Less commonly, underlying illnesses affecting the liver, thyroid, or kidney may affect blood cholesterol levels.

What Causes High Cholesterol?

High cholesterol level is common problem and the reason behind high cholesterol levels is the spicy and waxy food. Genetics, lifestyle and diet are the main causes of high cholesterol. You can prevent high cholesterol by making right changes in your lifestyle and diet.

High Cholesterol Ka Desi Elaj

Type of Cholesterol

There are three types of Cholesterol levels LDL, HDL and Triglycerides.

HDL Cholesterol

HDL stands for High Density Lipoprotein. HDL cholesterol is the good cholesterol that prevents Atherosclerosis and it helps pull excess cholesterol away from the tissues.

LDL Cholesterol

LDL stands for Low Density Lipoprotein. LDL Cholesterol is the bad cholesterol that creates plaques that narrows arteries. It is bad because it leaves deposits in your blood vessels.

Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a little different from LDL, but are also a bad kind of cholesterol.

Symptoms of High Cholesterol

A simple blood test can tell you if you have high cholesterol. The blood test checks for three types of cholesterol, HDL, LDL, and Triglycerides. Combined, these three types of cholesterol make up your total cholesterol levels.

What Happens When Cholesterol Is Too High?

If the cholesterol level exceeds from the normal it can create a real problem. Cholesterol travels into the body through the blood and if the level of cholesterol increases it makes the blood thick which create difficulty in its circulation resulting heart attack. The irregularity and disturbance in the blood flow also affect the kidneys and liver. The organ system most affected by high cholesterol is the circulatory system, or your blood vessels. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, deposits can start to form inside the arteries. This is a serious problem, because over time, those deposits can grow and restrict the flow of blood to our vital organs. A blocked artery in the heart can cause a heart attack, while a blocked artery in the brain can cause a stroke. High cholesterol is one of the risk factors that can lead to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

How to Control Cholesterol

Best way to prevent or reduce high cholesterol is to control your lifestyle and diet. Avoid high cholesterol foods, such as foods that come from animals like eggs, meats and cheeses. There are even some foods that can help improve your cholesterol. These include fish, soy products and foods with soluble fiber. Proper diet is a key to better health of the individual. The focus should be on a balanced diet instead of proper diet. A good balanced diet also helps in controlling cholesterol levels, which is important for a healthy lifestyle.

Cholesterol increases the amount of fat in the body resulting weight gain. Try eating things containing fiber like oatmeal. White meat is very good for controlling cholesterol so do take fish, preferably those having omega 3, routine wise like two times a week. The use of olive oil especially with green salads is very fastidious combination for controlling the cholesterol level as it contains antioxidants. So collectively eat natural and avoid the junk.

Exercise can boost your HDL, or the “good cholesterol” in the blood. If diet and exercise aren’t doing enough to lower your cholesterol, your doctor may prescribe medications.

Different foods lower cholesterol in various ways. Limit your intake of foods full of saturated fats, trans fats, and dietary cholesterol. Omega-3-rich fish, such as salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, and trout. Choose at least 2 times weekly.

Red meats are the least desirable choice because they not only tend to have the highest proportion of saturated fats, they are also higher in heme iron, which likely raises the risk of type 2 diabetes and colo-rectal cancer.

Eat a lot more fiber rich foods especially foods like beans, oats, barley, fruits, and vegetables. Vegetables rich in soluble fiber include carrots, Brussels sprouts, beets, okra, and eggplant. Good fruit sources are berries, passion fruit, oranges, pears, apricots, nectarines, and apples.

Nuts and seeds have been proven to modestly lower LDL cholesterol levels. To avoid blood-pressure-raising salt, choose raw or dry-roasted, unsalted varieties. To avoid gaining weight, don’t eat more than 1 ounce daily since nuts and seeds are dense with calories.

Using liquid vegetable oils such as canola, sunflower, safflower, and others in place of butter, lard, or shortening when cooking or at the table helps lower LDL.

Eating soybeans and foods made from them, like tofu and soy milk, was once touted as a powerful way to lower cholesterol.

Being overweight and not exercising affect fats circulating in the bloodstream. Excess weight boosts harmful LDL, while inactivity depresses protective HDL. Losing weight if needed and exercising more reverse these trends.

Saturated and Unsaturated
